멸종 위기 동식물 보호를 위한 노아 프로젝트는 ‘노아의 방주’에서 따 지은 이름에서 그 지향점을 분명히 알 수 있다. 현대판 노아의 방주 역할을
수행하겠다는 의지를 담은 프로젝트를 통해 궁극적으로 추구하는 것은 100% 친환경 패션. 제품을 통해 환경문제에 대해 말하고 이와 관련한 캠페인을 진행하며 이에 따른 판매
수익금은 사라져가는 동식물을 지키는 곳에 기부한다. 그리고 이를 통해 모든 산업, 더 나아가 전 인류에게 가장 중요한 숙제인 지구를 지키는 실질적인 방안을 고민하고
실행한다. 과도한 생산과 폐기가 야기하는 환경오염의 심각성에 자성의 목소리를 내고 현실적 대안을 모색하며 친환경 소재와 제작 방식으로 환경오염을 줄여나가는 것이다.
2016년 S/S 시즌에 시작된 노아 프로젝트는 토종 꿀벌과 함께했다. 2009년 기준으로 우리나라에서 기르는 토종 꿀벌은 38만 통이 넘었지만 바이러스와 전염병, 살충제,
전자파 등의 영향으로 2013년 기준 1만여 통만이 살아남았다. 코오롱스포츠는 숲과 들판에서 꽃을 피우고 열매를 맺게 하며 인간에게는 꿀을 선물하는 토종 꿀벌이 멸종 위기에
처한 현실에 주목하며 ‘BEE STRONG’이라는 이름으로 토종 꿀벌 살리기 캠페인을 진행했다. 같은 해 F/W 시즌에는 한국의 독수리를 지키기 위한 활동을 진행하며
프로젝트를 이어갔다. 이후 매년 제주에서 자생하는 꽃인 한라솜다리, 울릉도에 서식하는 해마, 지구온난화로 개체수가 줄고 있는 나비, 건강에 좋다는 이유로 사람들이 무분별하게
채취하며 사라질 위기에 처한 섬개광나무 등을 주인공으로 노아 프로젝트는 계속되었다.
프로젝트를 매해 거듭하며 사라져가는 동식물에 대한 관심을 유도하고, 이를 지키는 활동을 하는 기관에 기부하는 것을 넘어 보다 진정성 있는 방향으로 나아가기 위해
2020년부터는 제품 제작 단계부터 친환경을 실천한다. 2020년에는 재선충으로 인한 피해로 멸종 시기가 점점 빨라지고 있는 백송을 주제로 프로젝트를 진행하며 원사부터
생산, 포장, 그래픽, 디자인 등 제품을 만드는 전 과정에 걸쳐 친환경을 실천했다. 프로젝트의 진정성을 보여주는 리버스톡(rebirth와 stock의 합성어) 패딩 의류를
시도하기도 했다. 리버스톡 패딩은 코오롱스포츠의 다운 의류를 해체해 얻은 충전재를 새로운 패딩 의류의 원자재로 활용하는 것. 재활용에 관한 국제 섬유 인증 기준인
‘GRS(Global Recycled Standard)’ 인증을 거친 공정한 방식으로 생산한 리버스톡 패딩은 물 사용량을 현저히 줄일 수 있는 염색 방법인
DTP(Digital Textile Printing) 기법을 적용해 더욱 주목받았다. 2021년 F/W 시즌에 진행한 노아 프로젝트에서는 멸종위기 야생식물 2급인 섬현삼에
주목해 자연과의 상생을 다시금 강조한다. 제품 라인 또한 환경보호 정책에 충실해 겉감과 충전재 모두 친환경 원료를 사용하고 리버스톡 패딩을 통해 코오롱스포츠 다운 점퍼에서
추출한 구스 다운을 100% 충전재로 재활용하는 데 성공한다. 코오롱스포츠는 노아 프로젝트를 통해 지구는 인간만을 위한 곳이 아니라 수많은 동식물이 건강히 살아가야 인간의
삶도 지속 가능하다는 것을 끊임없이 일깨우고 있다.
The Noah Project, aimed at protecting endangered species, takes its name from
the biblical ‘Noah's Ark,’ clearly indicating its mission. This modern-day Noah's Ark project
embodies a commitment to pursuing 100% eco-friendly fashion. Through its products, the project
speaks about environmental issues, conducts related campaigns, and donates sales proceeds to
conservation efforts for disappearing species. Beyond just raising awareness, the initiative
seeks and implements tangible solutions to protect our planet, a task of utmost importance to
all industries and humanity at large. The project confronts the environmental degradation caused
by excessive production and waste and advocates for sustainable materials and manufacturing
methods. The Noah Project commenced in the 2016 S/S season, focusing on local honeybees. As of
2009, over 380,000 local beehives existed in our country, but due to viruses, diseases,
pesticides, and electromagnetic waves, this number dwindled to just over 10,000 by 2013.
Recognizing this alarming decline, Kolon Sport launched the ‘BEE STRONG’ campaign to save the
native honeybees. In the same year's F/W season, the project continued, this time to conserve
Korea's eagles. Over the years, the Noah Project has spotlighted other species, including the
native Jeju flower 'Hallasomdari', seahorses from Ulleung Island, butterflies affected by global
warming, and the ' Cotoneaster wilsonii ' tree, which is at risk due to excessive harvesting for
its health benefits.
In 2020, embracing a more genuine approach to sustainability, the project focused on the pine
tree, which is facing accelerated extinction due to pine wilt disease. The entire product
lifecycle, from yarn production, packaging, graphics, to design, was eco-friendly. One of the
project's signature products is the ‘Revelstoke’ padding (a fusion of "rebirth" and "stock")
This padding reuses the filler from Kolon Sport down clothing, transforming it into raw material
for new apparel. Produced in compliance with the ‘GRS (Global Recycled Standard),’ the
Revelstoke padding, which also utilizes the water-saving DTP (Digital Textile Printing) dyeing
method, has received significant attention. In the 2021 F/W season, the Noah Project highlighted
'Scrophularia takesimensis', a Class 2 endangered wild plant, emphasizing once again the concept
of coexistence with nature. Their product line remains committed to environmental protection
policies. Using both eco-friendly outer materials and fillers, they have successfully recycled
100% of the goose down extracted from Kolon Sport down jackets through the Revelstoke padding
method. Kolon Sport continually reminds us through the Noah Project that our Earth is not just
for humans. Only when numerous species thrive can humanity sustainably continue.
